Universal Electronics' Revolutionary Kameleon Technology Provides the Power of "Digital Ink" for RadioShack Universal Remote

Unique Kameleon Graphical Display Dynamically Changes To Reflect Entertainment Environment

CYPRESS, Calif. - Nov. 12, 2002 -
Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI) (Nasdaq: UEIC) today announced that its recently unveiled Kameleon™ interface technology has been selected by RadioShack Corp. (NYSE: RSH) to power its next-generation universal remote control. Kameleon is a revolutionary display technology that acts as "digital ink" to intelligently illuminate only the set of keys needed to control each entertainment device, such as the television, DVD player or cable box. The Kameleon-powered RadioShack 6-in-One universal remotes will allow consumers to operate up to six entertainment or home automation devices through one graphical interface for intuitive and superior control of the home entertainment environment.

With Kameleon, the universal controller intelligently changes its display to reflect the user's entertainment environment, whether it's listening to music, enjoying the home theater or simply watching television. For example, when a user watches television, he or she will only see and be able to send TV-specific commands, such as channel or picture-in-picture selections. When the user switches activities and begins to watch a movie instead, keys such as Play, Fast-Forward and Stop are displayed so the user can control the DVD player. In this way, consumers enjoy simplified interaction with their entertainment devices through the easy-to-use, graphical, touch display that shows only the relevant functional keys for each device.

Kameleon's signature backlighting also provides a bright and vivid display for easy viewing, and the animated graphics on the display give a quick visual feedback of the controller's status. Combined with a sleek, low-profile, one-handed design, this new wireless controller brings together functionality and design in a unique offering that focuses on enhancing the consumer entertainment experience. The Kameleon-powered 6-in-One controllers will be available at select RadioShack retail locations nationwide for the holiday season.

"RadioShack has always been a destination for the latest technology, and with the introduction of Kameleon, we are continuing that tradition," said Don Galloway, vice president of merchandising for RadioShack's Connecting Places Strategic Business Unit. "Universal Electronics' Kameleon technology is truly a breakthrough in wireless control technology, and we're pleased to be able to add such a highly differentiated and engaging product offering as part of our overall line of accessories."

"We are excited to work with RadioShack as the first company to commercialize Kameleon in North America," said Paul Arling, chairman and chief executive officer of UEI. "RadioShack's unique position in the marketplace as a recognized and trusted leader in consumer electronics specialty retail is a perfect fit for the introduction of such an innovative and visually compelling technology as Kameleon to the mass market."

In addition to its dynamic, graphical display, the RadioShack 6-in-One remote offers advanced features for the home-theater enthusiast, such as UEI's superior connectivity software for coverage of the most brands of consumer electronics devices, upgradeability to provide ongoing coverage of any new devices that come to market, macros for instant activation of favorite key sequences, and a learning mode to capture and reproduce device functions from original remote controls.
