New Kenwood Line to Include Kameleon Technology to Empower Consumers With Advanced Control of Their Entire Home Entertainment Environment

CYPRESS, Calif. - Oct. 21, 2002 -
Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI) (Nasdaq: UEIC) announced today that it has been selected by Kenwood Corporation to be the exclusive supplier of all universal wireless controllers for Kenwood's new home audio product line in the United States and Europe. Included in this line will be controllers powered by Kameleon™, UEI's recently announced "digital ink" technology that intelligently illuminates only active device keys for a uniquely intuitive graphical control interface. The agreement, which expands UEI's role as a longtime supplier of control technology for various Kenwood products, will provide Kenwood with an advanced line of wireless controllers sharing common design elements for a superior and consistent consumer experience across all Kenwood home audio products, as well as seamless interaction with the entire home entertainment environment.

Leveraging the experience of its award-winning industrial design team, UEI has worked with Kenwood to design a line of universal controllers with intuitive key layouts, visual key groups and ergonomic designs that create a common look and feel from one model to the next. Combined with UEI's strong portfolio of innovative wireless control technologies, such as macros, high-frequency learning and Kameleon technology, the unified line of controllers will bring together advanced functionality with unique, consumer-friendly design that will help differentiate Kenwood's family of home audio products while strengthening its brand, known to consumers for providing superior quality, reliability and value.

"At Kenwood, we take pride in providing world-class home audio technology that serves as the foundation for a truly connected, home entertainment experience," said Brian Towne, director of product development for Kenwood USA. "Delivering that experience includes providing consumers with the ability to interact with all of their devices through a wireless controller that is not only easy to use, but also has the advanced functionality that power users require to take full advantage of everything a Kenwood product has to offer. Partnering with UEI allows us to empower the consumer at all levels and centralize their point of control through Kenwood's interface."

"As Kenwood continues to lead the way with superior home audio products for the connected consumer, we are excited to work with it to utilize distinctive UEI technologies, such as Kameleon, that provide an optimal consumer experience," said Paul Arling, chairman and chief executive officer of UEI. "Expanding our relationship with Kenwood is a great compliment to our hardworking team of engineers, designers and researchers, who continually focus on the goal of making it easier for consumers to connect, control and interact with their home electronics environment."

The first of the new wireless controllers will be available to consumers as early as the first quarter of next year. Today's announcement marks another milestone in the collaborative relationship that has spanned nearly a decade of innovation in the consumer electronics industry.
