Universal Electronics Announces Commercial Availability of Kameleon With Unveiling at IBC2002 in Amsterdam

Revolutionary Wireless Display Technology Combines the Power of Traditional Controllers With a Unique Touch Interface for Unmatched Consumer Ease of Use

CYPRESS, Calif. - Sept. 12, 2002 -
Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI) (Nasdaq: UEIC) today unveiled the commercial availability of Kameleon™, the next generation in control interface technology, at the International Broadcasting Convention, IBC2002, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Kameleon is a revolutionary display technology that provides unparalleled ease of use by intelligently illuminating only active device keys through an intuitive, graphical interface for superior control of the home entertainment environment. Devices powered by Kameleon will offer consumers a state-of-the-art, wireless, handheld control device that utilizes an intuitive graphical user interface to maximize ease of use and enjoyment.

In ongoing demonstrations at the IBC show, Sept. 13-17 at Amsterdam's RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre, Universal Electronics BV (UEBV), the European headquarters of UEI, will show manufacturers of set-top boxes, televisions, VCRs, DVDs and other audio/visual components - as well as broadcasters attending the event - how they can use Kameleon technology to differentiate their product offering and enhance the consumer experience of home audio/visual control at a fraction of the cost of comparable liquid crystal displays (LCD).

"With Kameleon, we can now offer customers a unique way to differentiate their product offerings, using innovative technology that delivers ease-of-use functionality normally found on today's more expensive LCD remotes with flexible, tactile and ergonomic design features for a singularly distinctive and elegant control solution," said Paul Arling, UEI chairman and CEO. "The introduction of Kameleon signifies an exciting continuation of UEI's heritage in bringing to market new wireless control technologies that empower consumers with the ability to connect, control and interact with their increasingly complex home electronics environment."

Kameleon display technology enhances any OEM product with a wireless control interface that provides unmatched ease of use for the consumer. The customizable graphical interface allows for intuitive interaction, utilizing key animation to provide visual feedback of functions, such as mode indication, control commands and programming status. By illuminating only the active keys for a specific device, while hiding inactive functions, Kameleon supports high-density key layouts without key clutter or confusion for the consumer. Combined with a vivid, bright display and tactile feedback, Kameleon delivers a high-end yet cost-effective control solution that is ideal for the home theater environment. Kameleon demonstrations will be held in stand No. 4.149 at the RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
