Universal remote controls are a marvellous idea, allowing
you to integrate the functions of a bunch of handsets into
one space-saving unit. One For All leads the field, with
a stream of innovations in design and function. The One For
All 6 Kameleon is possibly the company's most ingenious product
yet.
In many ways the Kameleon resembles earlier models.
It's pre-programmed with codes to control up to six units,
which can include TV, DVD, VCR, hi-fi, CD, satellite tuners
and other systems. It can also 'learn' infrared codes from
existing handsets, or be programmed with new ones from One
For All's telephone database. But the Kameleon's unique feature
is its EL (electro luminescent) display, which lights up
when you pick up the unit, and changes to reflect the operating
mode you select. With its chunky aluminum case and slick
macro functions, this makes the Kameleon quite the snazziest
product of its type we have seen. Our only real complaint
is that you need a screwdriver to remove the cover for the
four AAA batteries - presumably this is to discourage toddlers
from swallowing them. Otherwise, sublime...
